About
Welcome to Kawafuku, a charming and traditional eatery nestled in the heart of Takamatsu, Kagawa, Japan. Located at 2-1 Daikumachi, this nostalgic diner may be compact in size, but it offers a huge portion of heart and hospitality. Run by a warm elderly couple, the atmosphere is nothing short of welcoming, making it a delightful stop for both locals and travelers seeking an authentic Japanese dining experience.
The menu at Kawafuku is a seafood lover's dream, presenting a variety of options including the highly praised tempura and sashimi. For just 900 yen, patrons can indulge in a hearty set meal where they select either shrimp or fish tempura, accompanied by a steaming heap of white rice, miso soup, and assorted side dishes. The food is beautifully presented, although some customers noted that the self-serve system at the counter could lead to slightly cooler dishes. Nonetheless, the perfectly seasoned tempura and the fresh, expertly cut sashimi—offered for an additional 1,000 yen—confirm why Kawafuku is a must-visit. Seasonal ingredients, like salmon and yellowtail, reflect the freshness and quality that patrons appreciate.
One of the rave reviews highlighted the kindness shown by the owners. Notably, when a guest left behind their sunglasses, the owner’s son rode his bicycle to return the lost item, showcasing the exceptional level of care that defines this establishment. The personal touch and intimate charm make you feel right at home, even though the shop itself is modest and at times crowded.
Visitors often remark on the deliciousness of the miso soup and the freshness of the fish, which is treated with reverence in its preparation. Adding a touch of nostalgia, customers find it refreshing to dine in a place that feels like a step back in time, away from the frenetic pace of modern life. Some have even called it a rare gem, especially in a world where such intimate dining experiences are becoming increasingly rare.
If you’re wandering through Takamatsu, a visit to Kawafuku promises not just a meal but a memory. With its friendly service, delightful seafood dishes, and the comforting atmosphere created by an endearing older couple, you may just find your new favorite spot. Don't be surprised if you leave with a full belly and a warm heart, eager to return for another taste of their exceptional offerings.
“ Nostalgic neighborhood diner. Very small shop with cute elderly couple running things. Menu focuses on seafood and small plates including catch of the day sashimi. Fish is fresh and expertly cut. Fried tofu had a wonderful gentle taste. It's becoming increasingly difficult to find places like this these days, worth a visit. ”
“ Food is good and very affordable. The restaurant is obviously old and retains a kind of nostalgic atmosphere. The old couple running the shop is very nice. Location is slightly out of the way but is well worth the effort to visit. ”
“ It’s truly a hidden treasure, don’t hesitate and go inside! We were lucky to have the eel rice bowl and crispy shrimp and fried fish and of course the sashimi! Everything’s so yummy, that shrimps were my fav. The couple are very nice and warm, we learnt that their restaurant is on the 44th year, and you can see so many pieces of history in their place! We enjoyed talking with the owners, they are really cute and kind. Dinner was absolutely delicious!!!!! ”
